From Marine to Coach

Coach Jesse Lucio a U.S. Marine Corps veteran has taken the leadership, teamwork, and resilience he learned during his military service and applied them to coaching a youth soccer team.

One of his most memorable experiences from his time in the Marines from 1996 to 2004 was the strong bond that developed among his fellow service members. "The brotherhood we all shared, being from different backgrounds and beliefs. When we deployed and having each other's six every step of the way made it easier for us all," he reflected. This union is something Coach Jesse brings to his role as a coach, where he emphasizes teamwork and mutual support.

His military experience also shaped his approach to leadership. "In the military, we never give up; we push ourselves to the limit and look out for each other," he said. As a coach, he is passionate about helping his players become the best versions of themselves, both on and off the field. He wants his athletes to succeed in life, whether through soccer or other pursuits.

Despite the challenges of missing home during his service, Coach Jesse found strength in his faith and the support of his family. "My Mom wasn't always in the best condition so I would worry about her as much as she did for me. She was so proud of me til the day she passed," he shared. Her encouragement continues to influence his life and coaching today.

For Coach Jesse, Veterans Day is a time to honor the sacrifices of all who served. "A day of appreciation to the men and women who served with honor and loyalty to this great nation," he said. He also added that this day is for those who made it back home from their deployments not to be confused with Memorial Day dedicated for those who didn’t make it back.

He encourages civilians to be understanding of veterans' transitions to civilian life, which can be challenging and unique for everyone. He also recommends supporting programs like Wounded Warrior, which help veterans reintegrate. "At the end of the day, a simple thank you goes a long way," he adds.

As a coach for the 06/07G youth soccer team, Coach Jesse is proud of the progress his players have made. His military background continues to shape his coaching philosophy, helping him inspire resilience, discipline, and teamwork in the next generation of athletes.
